Mangos from BuurSine: From harvest to export crate
Our mango trees grow in the lowlands of Niayes, a vast wetland in an otherwise dry Senegal.
For the export trade the smallholders exclusively cultivate the variety Kent. The medium-sized fruits are poor in fibers and very aromatic.
They are harvested with a knife blade on a long stick. Immediately after picking the long stems on the fruit are cut off. The harvesters skillfully place the fruit with the cut edge downwards on the ground, so that the fruit cannot become sticky or damaged.
The collected mangos are immediatly driven to the packing station, where they are washed, sorted, packed and shipped, thus providing work for a total of 120 employees and 75 farming families.
In comparison to mangos from other provenances Senegalese mangos have a quite short transport route from tree to Central Europe. This means that they retain their intense aroma.

The cashew trade in Senegal
Senegal is the world leader in the production of cashew nuts – the harvest, which is spread over 4 regions, is estimated at around 20,000 tons of raw nuts per year.
This production plays a major role in the source of income for more than 100,000 people who are employed not only in the countryside, but also in urban areas and in various industries. Cultivation, harvesting, transport, post-harvest, processing and export of the cashew nuts are of great economic importance for the country.
